A Brief History
The beginning of Schoolguide
Magazine stemmed from the meeting of minds of two dynamic
individuals, Tom Ocampo and Junn Geronimo. This innovative pair
shared a common vision–make available a service that can ease the
transition from high school to college for the millions of students
nationwide. Seven years ago, there was a dearth for this type of
service in the academic environment especially in the rural areas
where career orientations and guidance counseling for course
discernment were not prioritized, to the point of being neglected.
After a thorough study of the educational viability of a
publication-based service, SchoolGuide was created. The
original concept was to publish the magazine once a year.
The magazine’s maiden issue had its share of birth pains. However,
the hardships were overcome through the strong leadership of Tom and
Junn. The magazine’s debut was in June 2001, with Aiza Seguerra
on its cover. This issue first made the rounds of Metro Manila
public high
schools. It was several months later that it was introduced to the
private academic institutions.
In its second year, a provincial
edition was in the works, alongside the Metro Manila publication.
The provincial issue was a compilation of colleges and universities
covering the major provinces and it was distributed to various
schools nationwide. By the third year, the magazine not only had an
issue for Metro Manila but likewise had separate editions for the
following regions:
-
Northern and
Central Luzon,
-
Southern Tagalog
and Bicol,
-
Visayas,
and
-
Mindanao
Schoolguide, on its fourth year, fifth and sixth year decided to
focus on its roots by publishing only the Metro Manila edition. This
move was necessary to decide on how the magazine shall be further
developed as regards content and format.
Now on its eighth year and in line with its
goal, the management and staff of Schoolguide are currently in the
process of re-inventing itself to conform to the shifting
educational landscape and to develop other education-related
services that will complement its initial publication.
In broadening the magazine’s coverage, it streamlines its operation
by:
• creating separate editions for Northern Luzon,
Central Luzon,
Southern Tagalog, and Bicol,
• covering more schools in both the Visayas and
Mindanao editions,
•
systematizing works for its widespread seminars
and the soon-to-be-released Paths Magazine,
• developing the graduate school section into a
magazine
tentatively called Schoolguide
Advanced, and
•
building wider coverage for The BESTBOOK which
features basic and
early childhood education
schools.
Schoolguide
is also laying down the groundwork in
conducting seminars that tackle post-graduate studies. The seminar
is designed for the professional community, academic officials, and
the college students. Steps have been taken to
feature the finest academic institutions situated in the Philippines
and in other countries.
Looking forward to its 9th year in the academic community, Schoolguide Magazine is steadfastly committed to its advocacy and
service for and in partnership with the education sector.

Mission
Schoolguide
Magazine is the foremost publication that provides Information
of and about the academe. In this field rife with various interests,
the magazine upholds only those that serve the most benefit to our
primary readers.
With this main thrust in mind, each edition of Schoolguide aims to
raise the students’ consciousness for higher education. More than
merely data about schools and courses, over and above the necessity
of receiving a diploma, the magazine seeks to inspire the students
to go beyond their self-imposed limitations, explore their strongest
assets, and pursue their highest aspirations.
To achieve this endeavor, Schoolguide aims to empower the students
and their parents by providing them with equitable opportunities.
This broadens their options that in turn can assist the students in
reaching one of the most crucial decisions in their lives–correct
career choices.
In the process of imparting this knowledge, Schoolguide
furthermore aims to counter misinformation that abounds in the
promotion of school services. The magazine intends to enlighten the
students in order that they can never be misled by fanciful
presentations or by empty promises.
By attaining these goals, Schoolguide can therefore contribute to
the improvement of the academic environment. In doing this, the
magazine would have done its share to re-awaken the country’s pride
in its educational system and regain its glory in the international
academic arena.
